Hi All, Ok i have a client who decided they needed to test the safety switch on the building power. However Two users decided not to shut down there Pc's and so now after the test these pc will not power up anymore. Both Pc's are plugged into the same power board, they have have power to the monitors but not the pc's. I got them to reset the power board but still no power. I'm suspecting the power supply's on both pc have been fried. any other suggestions?

Regards
Max

Try unplugging the PCs from the wall, removing the battery, and pressing and holding the power button for 30-45 seconds. Other than that I would guess from afar that the PSUs are bad.

This happened to me also, although I did not try continuing to use the PC, just shut it down. The UPS' battery did not hold long enough to complete the shutdown, resulting in a fried PSU.

Hi,
These are desktops not laptops but i got them to try the remove the power cord and hold the power button trick but also didn't work.
I guess they'll be shutting down first before checking the safety switch from now on. Just hope that's all they fried.

A great argument for having a UPS on each computer - if it's important enough to you that you need it to run reliably and after storms/surges.

Ok what happened One of the pc's got a spike and fried the power suppply the other one wouldn't fire up because the power board board also got spiked and so was not supplying the other pc with enough power to start up.
But yes i agree a ups would have save a lot of hassles.

People should consider operating computers more like their cars - you have car insurance, airbags in the car and you wear a safety belt. People try to go naked with computers - no protection (antivirus, antispyware, power protection) and wonder why bad things happen.

It keeps me in business though.

I have seen this happen with PC's before....

Try unplugging the power supply connector from the motherboard for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and press the power button.

I've seen it work more than once....

Just my 2¢

The power supply was fried, tested the power supply and nothing, no power was coming out of it any more. i think all the smoke had been let out.
The power board was also fried so replaced the power board and the supply and all is good again.
They were lucky this time that all they fried on the pc was the power supply.

These instructions work for both. By "battery" I meant the CMOS button battery. I've had it work on wacky PC problems when everything else had failed.

Thanks all, this issue has been solved and the users have been slapped about the ears (metaphorically speaking) and told to shut down fully next time before testing the building safety switch.
Thanks again for another quick response to an issue, there are some great tips i can try next time i run across something like this.

What is the use of having backup power that does not work?

We have had a truck take out our main power before. They did not get it back on for hours. There was not enough power for our IP Phone System so we had to shut it down. Power surges can sometimes take out your UPS. Whatever can go wrong will.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Another thing to consider on this issue is the quality of power protection, just like anything else.

After much reading on the subject, I grabbed up a couple of Brick Wall surge protectors. Go to their site to read about them, or read about them in forums. They're well worth the price difference, I think, and once you read, you'll see why. For wider protection, they also have whole-building surge protection setups.
