PC will not boot unless a PS2 Keyboard is plugged in.

When the PS2 Keyboard is replaced with a USB Keyboard I get the following error during boot up.

"Windows could not start because the following file is corrupt or missing
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please reinstall a copy of the above file."

If I switch back to a PS2 Keyboard the system boots fine.

If you add the USB Keyboard after the PC boots the USB Keyboard does work. If you reboot with both keyboards pluged in they will both work but if you shut down and unplug the PS2 keyboard the system will not boot and I receive the above error message.

Here are the specs of the newly built PC.

Operating System = Windows XP Pro with all windows updates and service packs installed.

Try installing that file from your Windows CD:

Insert and boot from your CD.

At the first R=Repair option, press the R key

Select the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Usually #1

Change to the drive that has the CD ROM.

CD i386

expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

Take out the CD ROM and type exit

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Hi,
I must commend you on your description and hardware specs details.
Will the machine boot with any other USB devices attached?

System File Checker (sfc)
Scans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you
restart your computer.

Syntax
sfc [/scannow] [/scanonce] [/scanboot] [/revert] [/purgecache]
[/cachesize=x]

Parameters
/scannow
Scans all protected system files immediately.
/scanonce
Scans all protected system files once.
/scanboot
Scans all protected system files every time the computer is restarted.
/revert
Returns the scan to its default operation.
/purgecache
Purges the Windows File Protection file cache and scans all protected
system files immediately.
/cachesize=x
Sets the size, in MB, of the Windows File Protection file cache.
/?
Displays help at the command prompt.
Remarks
a.. You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run
sfc.
b.. If sfc discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it
retrieves the correct version of the file from the
%systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder, and then replaces the incorrect file.
c.. If the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder becomes corrupt or
unusable, use sfc /scannow, sfc /scanonce, or sfc /scanboot to repair the
contents of the Dllcache directory.

I had alread tried the repair option from the CD. I have also completly reinstalled XP.

I just ran SFC /scannow
But that did not fix the issue

Thanks but I am still stuck.

If the error is still there after you reinstalled xp (you did format the drive before reinstalling) the problem would seem to be with the motherboard. Make sure the bios is the latest and the USB support is set correctly. I've noticed some bioses have 'legacy keyboard support' option I've never used it but you might try it both ways.

I would agree with Franklin.
YOu need to upgrade your Bios and the drivers for your USB ports.
Does the same error happen with other USB devices connected?

In your bios there is a section for PCI device setup, you'll need to make sure that you've enabled USB mouse support...it's disabled by default.

Go with the suggested "Legacy USB Keyboard" setting.

If it's anything like my mobo and after glancing over ur manual, have you set the USB Keyboard setting to BIOS?
