i have a gateway pc on the boot up screen (gateway logo screen) it takes ages to boot and shows the hard drive and the cd-roms after about a minute, all this is fixed when i run a secondary hard drive on the primary ide as a slave. but it takes ages to work with just one hard drive set as master. anyone help?

Your bios may show an additional hard drive present when there is not one. At boot up the bios sees a second drive that it tries to boot but it is not there. This causes a temporary halt on error, after several tries to boot the non-existing derive the bios goes forward booting other devices until boot up is complete. See if you can access the bios then check and correct errors found.

Good luck!

Mike

still wont work i tried adjusting my bios settings but it doesnt fix the problem my pc also takes ages to shutdown ever since i had 2 drives.

What model of HD are you using as the primary master? 40 or 80-conductor IDE cable?

i dont know what sort of ide cable i am using but all these problems started after i used a second drive as primary with win 95 installed and my win98 as a slave and then tried to put it back to just my win98 as master and no slave.

Have you got bios set to autodetect second drive? (if so, it may be causing delay - looking for drive that isn't there)
