Hi,

I am thinking of setting up 8 IDE HD's in a server with a 350w power supply and was wondering if I should expect any problems during startup. Once the OS is installed on the main HD I will be removing the CD and floppy and installing the HD's so that will save some power. Here are the devices I will have installed.

350w pwr supply
8 7200 RPM HD's
1 NIC
1 IDE PCI Card (to handle the added HD's)
1 Video card.
Approx 512 MB of Ram.

I know SCSI would probably be a better way to go here but this is what I have to work with.

Per the Seagate web site each Hard drive will use
2.8 amps + or - 10%
12.5 watts seek
12.0 watts read/write
7.0 - 7.7 watts idle/standby

So you will have 102.4 watts to 112.64 watts just for the hard drive.

This is a lot considering you need to figure on at least two fans. (You didn't specify the size) And more depending on the size of the drives. As well as board power etc.

I would consider spending the money for a larger power supply or larger drives and cut down on the physical number of drives.

You aren't going to make it with 8 HDs on 350W. See how much each drive consumes. I'd guess you should go with about a 600W supply.
