Hi all
Got a pain in the neck. Friend has phoned with a system i built for him 18 months ago.
All has been well up to last week. Pc began crashing and can only get it to run when "failsafe defaults are selected" in the bios. As soon as you select correct or even lower settings for the Athlon 1700 XP it crashes again.
I have tried everything including step by step adjustments in the bios, have unplugged everything except mmemory and vid card. Changed the memory. You name it.But still it will only run in failsafe with the proccessor set at 1100 MHZ.

Anyone offer a solution or idea.
Tried a CPU test programme it just crashed.

Like i say in failsafe [cpu at 1100mhz] everything ok but very sloooooow.

Your help is much needed
thanks in advance

the board is an abit KR7a 133 with a gig of crucial pc 2100, vid card is nvidia geforce 3 ti 200. CPU athlon 17oo XP but have tried it at 16, 15, 14.
The board is jumperless and it autodetects cpu. Will only run if bios is set to failsafe defaults. This sets the CPU at 1100mhz which is an option that cant be selected anyway. Have tried everything but it will only run in failsafe.
thanks for help

I have the same exact problem with my pC, my MB is a ASUS A7V266-c.
I have done everything but throw it out the window.

If you find a solution to this problem, please post it as I am so frustrated with it.

Thanks,

An AMD XP1700 CPU is runs at 1.47mhz
The memory needs setting to 133 but is set to 100 at the moment (thats why it reports 1100 mhz and 1.47)
Just run one stick of memory
Damaged processors often behave like this! are you sure you have never had the heatsink fitted the wrong way around? even for 10seconds? (recess in base of heatsink must be positioned over the socket "A" writing)
You must have thermal paste applied between heatsink base and processor core.
If your XP1700+ is a thoroughbred core, it must have a copper based or all copper cooler (the smaller heat transfer area requires a metal with a higher heat coefficient, better transfer properties)
Older Palemino core is just off square shaped where as the smaller Thoroughbred is definately rectangular, visit AMD website for code identification of cores.

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

I have fitted about 70 of these CPUs and always double check befor i fit the motherboard. Always use arctic silver compound on an AMD cooler. Bios has been checked and double checked. Everything has been thoroughly checked out. Im stumped guess it may be a damaged cpu then. Ill get him to swap it to test
cheers for replies ill let you all know
