PC only half loads

My girlfriend's computer is loading only halfway. My point in mentioning that it isn't mine is to explain my lack of full info as she called me with the problem. I am spending the day with her so I can try to help her and any suggestions would help.

Everything was fine and I believed that she bumped he power cord on her tower which ended up shutting of the system. Each time that she tried to boot it up afterwards, everything will load up until the toolbar and then I believe that it freezes. She uses Windows XP I do believe. Definitely windows...most likely XP Home. It is a Dell. Wih her computer down I may not be able to access the net to find out what to do so I am asking for any possible solutions. Please suggest any additional info that you believe may help. If worst comes to worst, i will take my tower all the way to her place to get online to see if I can get any more help. I may be able to fix it on my own but I would definitely appreciate any guidance that can be offered.

yep just hit F8 when the computer initially boots then go into safe mode, click on restart computer and hopefully it will reboot in regular mode. This will occur every once in a while. It has also worked for me on ocasion. But dont loose faith in Xp it has been a godsend from the previous version of blue screens of death.

a strange problem...

are you sure the ONLY cause was because bumping the power cord, because that shouldn't cause a problem like this, unless you've been VERY unlucky...

it could be that windows was doing something when the power was disrupted, and it managed to wipe/corrupt some system files, in which case, you might want to repair/reinstall windows

or it could be that something burnt/dislodged/broke so you might want to reseat the mobo and psu and get mbm to check your voltages...

but both of these are reasonably unlikely, and doesn't usually cause the problems you're describing...

Most likely, there's something wrong with windows, esp the startup stuff. Are you sure she hasn't installed some new program which is causing this? (By program read malware/spyware/virus...)

She had the problem in the past and she ended up getting it to work a couple hours later early this morning. So I am sill going to take a look at it and see what the problem might be from there. But i am keeping my notification e-mail of this thread so I can easily locate it should I need guidance from there.

Well, from what i have experienced with win xp, it is a far better os than win98se and, it seems to me, that it sometimes fixes itself.
Crowley16's explanation that windows was doing something and got corrupted when the power went out seems to me to be the likely scenario, given what you have told us. And sometimes windows fixes itself.
There is a log somewhere in windows that will likely tell you what happened. I cant think of where it is right now, havent had my coffee yet, lol.
