Lately we have had problems with all Windows XP pcs not being able to access all the shared folders on one Windows 7 pc on the lan.
It is intermittent. I cannot think of what has changed recently.
It is temporarily fixed by a reboot of the Win7 pc, but since it is a server in an office environment, this can be difficult to do middle of the day.
Turning firewall software off on host and client has no effect.
Network sharing profiles are never changed as issue comes and goes.
Unsharing a folder, and resharing it has no effect.
The Win7 pc does show up as a networked computer and all are in the same workgroup.
All Windows 7 pcs on the lan can access the shared folders when all the XP pcs cannot.
Another Win7 pc on the lan is nearly an identical hardware build with same firewall and never has a problem.

There's your problem from a "how not to do things" perspective. Technically, they make something called Windows Server for this type of sharing. I know people are using workstations this way, but.......
 
Yes, i have turned off av/firewall on both pcs.
 
Ok, I added the irpstack in the registry.

So many locations for events...

I see
1) The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{C97FCC79-E628-407D-AE68-A06AD6D8B4D1}
and APPID
{344ED43D-D086-4961-86A6-1106F4ACAD9B}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

A lot of these, seem to corr with xp communication issues...
2) The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the configured limit for nonpaged pool allocations.

3) The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit.

4) The Application Experience service entered the stopped state.
 
Thanks Ben, I have looked there before but you prompted me to be more careful.
Many warnings about nonpaged pool corr with XP downtime led me to google it. I found -
Which pretty much sums it up.
The initial regkey path seemed vague on my win7 pc. I did locate both values in HKEY_local_machine.
My settings were 0, 1 respectively.
I changed them to 1, 3 respectively.
Now I'll reboot and hope. I'm pretty optimistic.
I did pull out my backup router and installed it with a newer version of the ddwrt firmware in case something odd was going on there.
We are a small office with relatively small loads, I don't see windows server os doing anything but adding cost and more time reading about configuring and maintaining the server. Our sql servers on the pc work well, it is just the file sharing problem.
 
Is your network set up as a domain?

are the users who are logging into the workstation logging in with AD accounts or local accounts?

If you are logging in with a local account on a XP machine and then trying to access a share on a windows 7 machine you would get the same erro as you are getting at the moment.
 
The changes to registry I mentioned in the last post has resolved the issues for two win 7 pcs that share some documents.
