This is a problem that is intermittent and never really went away. See thread: thread779-1082303

My Dell 8400 still hangs many a time when I get on the internet. Tonight I got freed up after about 4 minutes. In my former post, I forgot to mention that while any icon on my desktop is double-clicked on, that program will not start up. When I do an "Alt-Ctrl-Del", my task manager will not come up. I can bring up my connections box for Netzero. Just recently, I saw that I was connected for at least 20 minutes with all still frozen. I was, however, able to disconnect from netzero and the PC was frozen for a minute or two after the disconnect.

I keep my WinXP updated - OS, IE, Office, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Norton Antivirus 2005. I am still seeing DCOM time-outs and it didn't seem to make a difference if DCOM was enabled or disabled.

Please advise, thank you. -OldPCKen

Winsockxpfix.exe was a good thing to do. It resets your TCP/IP stack back to the defaults when XP was first installed through a series of registry changes. In addition, it clears your HOSTS file back to the default.

According to the author, this utility was developed because of the high number of corruptions that can occur when using spyware-removing applications such as Spybot or Ad-aware. Because removing spyware is such a routine process these days, many don't realize that they removed spyware the same day the problem started happening.

Glad you got it fixed, and thanks for the follow-up!

This problem is definately fixed! Thank again to all who helped.

When you first posted in thread779-1082303 (June 05) the Winsock fix link was linked to way back then as the first response. I wonder why it didn't work then for you but worked now?

Still, I'm am glad you finally fixed this problem, fingers crossed.
