This is a problem that is intermittent and never really went away. See thread: thread779-1082303

My Dell 8400 still hangs many a time when I get on the internet. Tonight I got freed up after about 4 minutes. In my former post, I forgot to mention that while any icon on my desktop is double-clicked on, that program will not start up. When I do an "Alt-Ctrl-Del", my task manager will not come up. I can bring up my connections box for Netzero. Just recently, I saw that I was connected for at least 20 minutes with all still frozen. I was, however, able to disconnect from netzero and the PC was frozen for a minute or two after the disconnect.

I keep my WinXP updated - OS, IE, Office, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Norton Antivirus 2005. I am still seeing DCOM time-outs and it didn't seem to make a difference if DCOM was enabled or disabled.

Please advise, thank you. -OldPCKen

Have you had a look in event viewer? This may give some clues as to what is happening in the background.

I think your freezing problem might be that Norton Antivirus 2005 as it hogs a lot of memory to run. Since you said that you always have this problem. I know I had installed Norton Antivirus and I couldn't do a darn thing on my computer, once I took that off and loaded another virus software my problems were solved. Its a suggestion

Hi, I was having this problem before I had Norton AntiVirus. I had Macafee Virusscan before that.
My event viewer is showing...
The server {5A63D47D-1BA2-48FF-9955-31207899BE01} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
and....
The server {CDECC4C3-7377-11D3-9A6C-00C04FF40D52} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
for tonight's login.
I did not have a chance to look them up in the registry. Check the link at the beginning of this thread. I will update this thread a little later.

Yes Nortons and Macafee hug the computer resources, get something else like AVG and your problems will probably be solved. The only issue is that it is almost impossible to uninstall nortons, they hook into dozens of places, you actually have to edid the registry manually.

Jurgen

In the options for Norton Antivirus, there is a setting for "Worm Protection" that seems to interfere with some types of connections. I would advise disabling it, and if that doesn't help, then disable as many 3rd-party apps as you can from starting with Windows (you can re-enable them one at a time later to find the culprit).

This might help with that:

If you're still stuck, you might also want to try uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling Netzero. Make sure you are installing a recent version.

Even though Mcafee or Symantec's products can be demanding, it is pretty uncommon for them to cause a lockup like this (especially on PC's that are faster than 1GHz).

I don't use Mcafee or Symantec's products....LOL
I use Avast and I think it is one of the best out there.
you can go with the free home version or the paid pro version. they are both good

I run this on my customer's networks that have billing software and they have no slowdown issues at all. Norton is especially bad with slowing a network down that one of the billing software company that my customer goes through will reccommends removal of Norton and Mcaffee. and use of alternate network friendly AV's

I just got in today after about 3 or 4 minutes. I saw the same 2 DCOM timeout messages in the event viewer.
I don't think my anti-virus program is the problem. Even if they are memory hogs....now that i'm freed up, i'm using about 330MB memory out of my 512MB and I have a 768MB page file.

What would cause my PC to freeze up so bad that my windows task manager would not show up? I will have the task manager running next time I get on the internet and check for CPU usage and memory hogs unless that window freezes.

One other thing to note...I have MS Outlook running before I log on the internet and hit "send/receive" as soon as netzero logs onto the network. I can see my mail come over very slowly while the PC is hung in the status bar. Thanks for the antivirus comments/recommendations.

Hasn't anyone else out there experienced what I am?

So from that response, I take it that you are going to try to disable all 3rd-party apps ANYWAY (see post above for help) and try Netzero again?

Have you checked your errors out via Google?

"The server {5A63D47D-1BA2-48FF-9955-31207899BE01} did not register" did not bring any English hits on Google, but foreign hits indicated a possible ???? link to McAfee software?

Have you considered running a good Registry Cleaner through your Registry?

I have tried disabling or shutting down 3rd party apps but could not find the problem program. I just logged in with my task manager open. My Netzero program uses 22024K. NZ is supposed to launch IE. It finally did after 5 minutes 45 seconds. All during the 5:45 freeze, CPU showed between 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3 to 4% and less than 290MB memory used.

I will try a complete de-install of Netzero and reinstall since I have a NZ 8.0 CD.

I got the same two DCOM timeout errors and it looks like they are for McAfee. I am currently only using McAfee firewall. I de-installed Virusscan, Privacy, Spamkiller last summer. Maybe I should get rid of McAfee firewall and go with ZoneAlarm. ;)

Check out your Services. Do you have any Services listed as Starting (under Status) or a blank space where it should say Started (under Status) followed by an entry for Automatic (under Startup Type)? This may indicate a hanging Service or problem in that area.

Do you have any friends with a different ISP who might be willing to install their Dialup ISP on your machine (just to test before removing it) to see if the problem occurs with a different ISP?

You could uninstall McAfee firewall rather than disabling it (preferred method to eliminate firewall problems) and go with the SP2 firewall just to check out if McAfee is a problem.

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.

Maybe this MS Article will help?

Also, I noticed that another user had the same problem with MSN's dial-up client. Their problem was resolved after uninstalling the software, and installing a newer version.

So it seems like this problem has nothing to do with other apps that you have installed...

Reloading Netzero did not relieve the problem. I will investigate the suggestions from past few responses. Thank you cdogg and linney.

Hi OldPCKen

My father was having the same problem you are describing using NetZero.

It ran fine for a while, then after an update things started crashing and locking up.

He tried several times at un-installing and re-installing the lastest version, but nothing worked.

I fixed it by, backing up his important data and reformatting and re-installing the OS, then installed the newest version of NetZero.

The system is running fine once again. There must be a bug in the updates to NetZero that are corrupting some files or something.

Good Luck.....

you can't find a better site.

I have run "sfc" and it did not find any bad files. I am running NetZero 8.NH4. I don't know what version I had when this problem started happening. I have Windows XP Home 2002 version - service pack 2 was pre installed. I wonder if I can fix it with my restore CD and reapply all the updates. I do not know what NetZero files may be in the windows or system32 folders. Would the fact that I have MS messenger de-installed cause a problem? I will try many things this evening.

If you look at the MS article I posted, it mentions the DCOM timeout error being caused by a broken or missing Registry entry for Windows Messenger.

So I think you're on to something here...

Hi OldPCKen
Just for your reference, SFC didn't find anything wrong for me either.

Hope this helps...

everywhere i look, i see norton=problem. same goes for zone alarm. they hog cup and create nightmare in networking.
to remove norton or mcafee is a horrible almost impossible task. i saw a posting here a few days ago. here's what i did to get rid of both:
try add/remove programs first.
stop the process in startup in msconfig.
in registry, delete any reference to norton/mcafee in safe mode
delete all entries from program file that refere to norton or mcafee (you may have to do it in command prompt and delete files first, then their folder(s).
reboot.

Hi, I tried installing another ISP software- maybe it is not different -Juno. Using Juno did not clear up the hanging problem. I re-applied SP2 and some updates that I had but that did not seem to clear up the problem either. I was planning to reinstall or do a fix on my XP OS. I have a restore CD, I downloaded all the updates up to date and a few special tools too. This morning I decided to try this "Winsock fix" for XP - winsockxpfix.exe and rebooted. I started up Netzero and got connected. And unexpectedly, IE started up right away and loaded the page and there was no hanging!! :-D :-D I will send an update in a few days to let you all know if this was too good to be true or not.
