Hi

Just tried doing some support for a client. They have a Windows98 PC (PIII) with an external Diamond 56Kb modem connected to COM1.

Issue: Initially the computer would go through the motions of connecting - verifying password etc, then immediately disconnect. I changed the Modem port, played around with the settings, removed and added the modem again.

I finally got the modem to actually connect...all good to this point...but now it automatically disconnects after 13 seconds. I even added a "Internet Connection" to my own ISP from his PC just to confirm...and it bombed out after 13 seconds.

I'm stumped! Anyone know why the connection is lost after 13 seconds? Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere? Is the modem defunked?

Any advice.....

Few suggestions:

Sounds like it could be noise on the line either at the remote module or perhaps the OE connection at the switch.

Also, try calling the phone company and tell them your troubles and ask them to test the impedance on your line which in a lot of cases can cause carrier drop.

If that doesn't help, ask the phone company to take you off TP (twisted pair) and put you directly on carrier.

Good luck!

Well I plugged the guys IBM thinkpad (Built-in modem) into the telephone line, and it connected fine and stayed connected. I'm thinking it's not the line unless an external modem can pick up noise that a laptop's built-in modem can't

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Tudor

I dont know if this will help at all. But I have seen in the past (years back) phone lines where you have a telephone connected to the same line, if the phone has memory features, they take a small charge of power from the line to keep their memory. When this happens a spike in power occurs and can upset a modem.

Just a thought,.

Hi there,

what Browser are you using? had the same prob a while back...

my browser had the wrong settings somewhere, I don't remember exactly where though, but I'm guessing that a complete reinstall should take care of it for you... it could have something to do with the TTL (time to live) option... I bombed my browser, IE5.5, way back and reinstalled, actually updated to IE6 SP1, it and didn't have the prob since... try that and get back to us...

I have the exact same problem now. I have been using my husband's old Windows 95 computer while a new power supply is being put into my computer. I have used this computer and modem for years. I did not download anything new or change any connections. It just suddenly started doing this one afternoon. I have deleted and reinstalled the modem, deleted and reinstalled the ISP software, but still it disconnects immediately after verifying my User ID, password, and telling me that I am logged on. I have checked for spyware, adware, etc, but find nothing. Any more suggestions?

Thanks,
