Hi,

I've just purchased a PC Chips 863G (v1.5a) mobo and I have noticed the board has an additional 4 pin 12v connector aswell as the usual 20 pin ATX.

I just want to know if the 4 pin power needs power to it or am i ok just to run off the standard ATX connection.

Thought it was strange that a Skt A board of this size (midi ATX) needs this much power?

I was thinking of using both power points on first boot anyway just to be on safe side.

As you suggest, it's there for a reason so don't leave it unconnected. Just thought it was strange as I've used a few PC Chips mobos in the past and none actually had the 4 pin connect?

The 4-pin connection supplies additional power to CPU circuits. You'll probably find the board won't start without it. If it starts without the 4-pin connection, and that's a big "if", you might be putting an unnecessary strain on other circuits. Connect it up every time...

Thanks guys,

I've now built the machine and used both power connections, everything runs fine!

Cheers for the input.)

From what I read, when facing the same thing:
Later CPUs required more current than could be safely pushed over the standard connector.
The fix was, supply 12v over the new 4-pin connector, put a small power supply on the mobo. That takes the 12v and makes whatever (5v, or 3.3, etc) the CPU needs.

Yep, it will not boot up without it. Had a heck of a time trying to figure out what was going on the first time I built one with the new connectors on it :)
