I just installed the following:

Definity T1 -->Cisco 3640 Voice Card -->Leased Line --> Cisco 3640 Voice Card ---> NEC PBX

The Definity is in the US and the NEC is in Asia.

Problem 1: When I dial to Asia. I cannot hear ringing tone but the other side pickup the phone. I suspect it is the problem at the other side.

Problem 2: How to I program the PBX to allow user to dial "8" to get to one trunk group only but not using ARS?

Any more information is needed, please let me know.

hrm, well.. unfortunately the only way to do what you want, at least of my knowledge is to put the 8 as the 2ndary ARS access code. Then we need to do a route pattern with both of those trunk groups in it. By setting up the the routers like I mentioned, this might give us the capability of the fallback to the 2ndary route pattern, for when it tries to pick the trunk up, it should give us a failure and hopefully the definity can detect that and go to the 2ndary route.

Buckweet:

Thanks for your help. The ringback tone is resolved by upgrading the IOS on the 3640 with 12.2. I ran around for about a week to find the solution of the problem.

Thanks again!

heh, yay IOS issue, that sure isn't a new fix..

KCBELL,
I'm planning on setting up a similar set up as you:
MN (Avaya Definity PBX) to cisco 2621 (VPN) to VA cisco 2621 to (NEC NEAX2400).

I was wondering if you know the T1 cards that were needed for the Avaya and the NEC? I'll be using the VOIP module NM-HDV-1T1-24. Does this just require a CAT5e cable with only one end with a RJ45 connector?

Does anyone have a sample cisco configuration to connect to the Avaya and to the NEC?

Thanks,
John

You need to use a T1 X-over to connect to the VWIC modules in the Cisco Routers from the PBX's

Just did the X-over cable thing for a simular application to the same Cisco card.

From a DB15 to the RJ45 for the Cisco
Pin 1 to pin 2
Pin 3 to pin 5
Pin 9 to pin 1
Pin 11 to pin 4

Or from the 25 pr. Amp to the RJ45 for the Cisco:
Pin 22 to pin 5
Pin 47 to pin 4
Pin 23 to pin 2
Pin 48 to pin 1

Oh, if its an RJ45 to RJ45 just flip pins 1 and 2 with pins 4 and 5.

Following is the sample of the Cisco 3640 configuration.

Key items:

1) Trunk type: On the Avaya, I use tie-line and trunk type is wink/wink. The router must use the same.
2) IOS: The current IOS is c3640-is-mz.123-1a.bin. Some IOS that I used did not send the ringing tone back to the Avaya. That means you dialed the number then you get silence until the other side answer. It also did not send CAS data to the CAS port.
3) Check the configuration everytime you change trunk type during test. One good debugging command is

sh dial-peer voice summ

You need to make sure the OPER field for both in and out are UP as well as all configuration are in place. Some line get removed when remove trunk and add trunk on the router.
