My CMS R12 has never been patched. I'd tell your IT group now way. If Avaya says to patch it then fine. Otherwise don't do it. Your just asking for problems.
Thanks to all for responding. Avaya responded and pointed out their policy which states that we can only apply Avaya patches (either Avaya does it, or we can if it's customer installable) and if we apply the patches directly from SUN ourselves we will void our warranty and our service contract with Avaya.
