Okay guys-
I have noticed for quite some time that patch cables in computer and electronics stores are extremely expensive. I can make my own for about 20 cents, which is just the cost of the plugs. I get most of my cable for free (scrap). I have a crimp tool which was a one-time expense. I get pre-made cables when I need them anywhere in the range of 68 cents to a couple dollars. Honestly, does anyone know any real differences between my 68 cent 3-foot cable and the one that costs 15 dollars at CompUSA?

Thanks-
Jeff

wow! I just asked what I thought to be a simple question, and as usual it launches into a personal attack on others. I like this forum, but it gets too emotional at times.

;) just be glad you didn't ask for a comparison between Linux and Windows

Jeff,

My appologies for going somewhat off topic, I am rather passionate about the trade and am annoyed with the arrogance of one individual at times.

Unless you are making patch cables with stranded wire, you could be asking for trouble as it is flexed around. If you do make them, I do for specific installations that require a longer custom length that is needed immediately, use stranded wire adn good quality plugs. I keep stranded wire in my truck, a couple colors of it, with various colors of boots, labels and plugs. Generally i don't think the cost of putting the plugs on, boots, a label and testing it is worth my time.

Just to add a little more, but different fuel to this fire regarding stranded and solid patch cables...Systimax has gone to solid cable for their X10D (Cat6A 10gig solution) patch cords. And having held one in my hand, they are amazingly flexible. Though their OD is huge!

If I remember correctly, you take a fairly substantial performance (in the impedence category I believe) hit going to stranded cable, but have the obviously better flexibility advantage. Another thing to watch for when going back and forth between stranded/solid is making sure you ends are suited for both or make sure you have some of each on hand, because not all modular plugs are universal (solid and stranded).

That is interesting, I'm sure there will be some amazing tricks done with the products to get the desired bandwidth. I'm not aware of a Cat6A standard though, unless it snuck by me, so at this point it seems like the patch cable would be 'non-compliant' with the standards? The main problem that I am aware of is the increase in attenuation, I believe impedance should remain the same, the stranded cable is more lossy. I believe you wouldn't be able to get a 295' piece of it to pass muster due to the high attenuation.

No the Cat6A standard hasn't been passed yet, but from what I've heard, is that the performance numbers have been finalized and won't change much. And since most manufactures are on the committe writing the spec, it's not to difficult for them to create product the meets the "proposed standard". Of course we've seen that all change before, but I get the feel from people I've talked to, that it won't be changing much.
It must be attenuation that I was thinking of. That's one of those things I just can't get to stick in my head.

This paticular forum use to be so different a year ago before, as Daron said arrogance came in and started condecending to everyone. It use to be a good place to find work arounds and not be insulted for it. "Sorry Mr. Customer, I can't do the job unless you do it the $2500.00 way". Yea right..

Don't worry about it. This forum is considerably more respectful than most of the internet.

Ask whatever you want about things pertaining to wire. I have seen some very good information passed around here. For example a recent thread introduced me to the VisiPatch system. A little googling (which usually expands the mind) and I may use their 110 blocks on my next project where the customer is not "cost sensitive".

Personally I have a problem when people give stars to comments like "hire a pro" since that sort of posting requires little knowledge. Far better (and worthy of stars) are responses that outline the job requirements so even if the original poster decided to hire a pro he would have an idea of what to look for in a quality job.

If I have offended any one here I am sorry. I cut my internet forum teeth on newsgroups and believe me this is Sunday School compared to those...
