I have read the thread688-805267 on how to reset the password on a Partner 3.0 Mail Module going through a station phone but can you re-initalize the module by the RS232 connection alone? We can talk to the module ok over the serial link until it asks for the password and we have to quit. Had changed the password & ip address a couple of years ago and have forgotten them since then reassigned IP addresses new server etc and now cannot connect to module over the network. Kind of a waste to have a message module and not be able to use it. Any help appreciated.

Um, Partner Mail R3 doesn't have an IP address.

Are you dealing with a PC looking box hanging on the wall external from the Partner control unit?

If so, and the serial number doesn't get you past the log on prompt through the serial port, the password has been changed. Unless you're dealing with a Release 1 instead

We setup a 5 carrier a year ago running R3.0 with a R1 Message Module. I am computer based not phone based. At the time we used RS232 to go in and set an ip address for the local net. In the mean time installed a new Dell server and reassigned fixed and DHCP ip addresses. Now a year plus later need to get back and setup the Messenger module to assign a correct ip address and have forgotten password. We also have a 2 port card installed in R1 module. The goal is to listen to voicemail as email attachments. How do we default the module back to original mode?

Is this the same system you are talking about??

Yes This is the same system from last year never was able to clear the old password. In my recent question I meant Message Module not Mail Module I was thinking voicemail. When I first set it up through the RS232 and Hyperterminal I changed the Admin password and the ip address from the defaults. The network changed since then and I cannot reach the Message Module from over the network and I cannot get in via the RS232 to change the ip because I forgot the password. How using the RS232 can I re-initialize the Message Module back to original defaults. It has never been set-up/used since being installed so we will not lose anything by resetting. Sorry for the confusion.

Backdoor passwords posted on this sight are frowned upon.
There isn't a default password for Partner Messaging although most people use 123456. Call your Vendor and if they are any good they will reset it for you for free.
WE DO

I am not asking for some wierd backdoor password. This is a up & up question. When I installed this new message module a couple of years ago we changed the sysadmin password and have forgotten it. I need in to change the module ip address so we can setup the network workstations to check and listen to voicemails. I assumed there was a standard way to set the module back to original defaults and start over. I did not imaging it was such a top secret thing or is it to force you to buy another message module. The vendor we tried said it could not be done.

The security issue is that unlike, say, a router that you reset with a recessed button on the physical unit, the voice mail is done by calling into it and entering a specific backdoor password to allow you in, regardless of what the current password is.

Can you imagine the havoc that could occur if a disgruntled ex-employee reset your voice mail, erased messages, changed recordings, etc?

If your vendor cannot do this for you, it's time to find an authorized Business Partner.

TTT of all the countless people you have helped and there have been alot. Your line
"If your vendor cannot do this for you, it's time to find an authorized Business Partner."
by far is my favorite.

Well, since we can't post backdoors (because the thread will be deleted by the moderators), and we can't post email addresses for off board contact (again, the moderators will remove it), what more can be done?

Yes, if I could contact the original poster, or he could contact me, I could dial in and reset it for him. So would any Business Partner, and if they said they couldn't, they apparently don't have technical resources.
