If you go to and search for Procurve 5406 you should be able to find the appropriate manual for your switch. These are in pdf format. I have pasted part of the manual below which might get you started. Beware this will erase your config & reset the switch to factory defaults

To execute the factory default reset on the switch, perform these steps:
1. Using pointed objects, simultaneously press both the Reset and Clear
buttons on the front of the switch.
2. Continue to press the Clear button while releasing the Reset button.
3. As soon as the Test LED begins to flash, release the Clear button.
The switch will then complete its self test and begin operating with its
configuration restored to the factory default settings.
To restore the factory default configuration using the console, execute the
erase startup config command from the console command prompt.

A "factory default reset" resets the configuration settings, but NOT the password.
To clear the password ONLY, you press the Clear button for a few seconds.

There should be a RESET & CLEAR button on the front of your switch probably close to the console port. These aren't proper switches and you will have to use a pointed object to simultaneously press BOTH Reset & Clear. Continue to press the Clear button whilst releasing the Reset button
As soon as the self test led begins to blink release the Clear button. The switch will then complete its self test & begin operating with its configuration restored to the factory default settings. This will clear the password and return the switch to factory default

Or as hermmert says in his reply you can clear all passwords and user names by getting physical access to the switch and pressing and holding the Clear button for a full second

no buttons at all !

Go to

Look at Current manuals and the 2nd one down is the pdf version

Installation and Getting Started Guide for the ProCurve Series 5400zl Switches
(February 2007, PDF: 3.16 MB)

Open this link & it will download the pdf file for the manual. Figure 1-5 on page 1-5 gives you a front view and pointers to the reset & clear buttons

If you still can't find them I can't help further
