I'm running Filemaker Pro 5.5 on a Windows 98 machine,
and the password dialog box is giving me hell! I want
to set up one master password, with complete access. No
problems there. I also want to set up a blank password,
with access limited to viewing only two of the four fields
the file contains. When I try to limit the "browse" option
by using a calculation using
Code:
fieldname=0
for
can't view and
Code:
fieldname=1
for viewable, not
putting in the master password just ends up not letting the
user see any fields at all! How can I set access rights so
a user with no password can see the contents of some fields
but not others?

You need to review creating Groups and assigning passwords to those groups. When you create groups you can define which fields and or layouts they can access or see.

I've tried using groups to set access, but I'm not sure
how it actually works. Once I create groups, how do I
specify which group is using the file? When I access the
file, it does not ask me anything, it just opens right up!

You have to assign passwords and then when you go and configure your groups you will the options of passwords to use and then the layouts and fields they have access to on those layouts. You need a master password with full access and then others that limit rights like add edit and delete. when you configure your groups the passwords assign tells the system which group and what access to layouts and fields. you check the layouts and fields with one of three options solid black has access hatch has no access and white has read only. these are the circle's next to each layout and field in group access.

itisnofun,

Thank you for the assistance. Unfortunately, I can't even
get that far, because the trouble is with creating the
password. I have one master password, and I want to
create one that limits browse rights. I have no idea
what calculation to use to do this, however. When I
change browse access to limited, I have to put in a
calculation. What do I do there? I understand how
group access works, but I can't even set up the password
to assign group access.

email me your address at mcoker@srisk.com

I will build you a sample file with some passwords and groups in it. That way you can see it. It is a little long to try to explain and would be easier to see it setup.
