Here is the situation...

We are storing all our software in a shared folder called install. We used to have security configured on it but it was too limiting, our tech had to log the users off and then log on under their user name to install anything.

Is there a way to password protect a shared drive without changing the access rights and without buying a 3rd party software ?

We are using windows 2000 and XP workstations.

Thanks but i should have mentionned that all the workstations are on windows 2000 (so is the server that the folder resides on). This trick of giving access only to a specified user/group doesn't seem to work. All i get is a acces denied pop up with no chance to try and enter a username and password to connect.
