I'm sure this is a silly question, but I don't want to tell someone the wrong thing. I've been following Mark's advise on using passphrases on my 2003 boxes, but a friend has a 2003 AD with NT BDC's in it. He wanted to know if he could use a 20 character passphrase without problems with the NT4sp6 BDC's. I was not sure. He doesn't run SMS or anything else on those boxes, they are just waiting to be retired.

So is it OK to use a 20 character passphrase with a NT BDC in 2003 AD?

Thanks!

I don't recall the maximum length for NT4 passwords, but you can set a MINIMUM to be 14, so I think it safe to say that it will support the 20 characters.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

In a bit more research I found that the maximum is 14. This was due to LANMAN restrictions. LM passwords are stored in one or two 7 character hashes.
