Password Issues

I resetting user passwords and selecting the option in PDC for the “user must change password on next logon” When trying to log on the client (win 2000 pro) there is an error message saying: the system cannot change your password now because the domain ”my domain” is not available.
Any help would be appreciated.

1)Is the domain available? Can you ping it from problem pc's?
2)Ipconfig /all from the problem pc's to see what the results are.
3)How many good/bad clients, or are all not able to change passwords?

Generally this is a network issue. Double check and make sure that all of your domain settings on your client machine are correct. Then check to see if any other clients can access your domain. This usually happens when you have a single class ip range and one of your clients are by mistake set up on a seperate range. Use a DHCP server to also maintain consitency, if your not already. If you use more than one range of ips, set up a router on your server so they can communicate.
 
All of my IP's are from Linksys router. It is weird because teh user can log in on teh domain. Just not able to change the password.
Yes i can ping the DC from the problem system.
I test only 5 users.

Could be a dns issue. try pinging the domain: testdomain.com. ping the name not the ip address

It is still possible for a user to log into a computer even if the domain controller is unavailable. The password is stored on the computer for a variable number of hours.
 
Yes you are right. Few days ago my server was off due to the global black out. Accidentally I boot one of the clients and I was able to log on the domain with the server off which is very confusing.
The following is the set up of my test network
Cable modem->Linsys Router->Netgear hub
My win2k server and few clients get IP from the Linsys firewall. The DNS on the server is the IP address of the server and in the forwarder I have the DNS of my ISP.
What can cause for the domain to be not available in this configuration?
 
Accidentally I boot one of the clients and I was able to log on the domain with the server off which is very confusing. No, it's not confusing. How many dc's do you have again? I had the problem of users not being able to log onto my domain sometimes, at others they could. While re-booting ONE of my DC's, everybody could log on. Turns out the dc I rebooted had a nic going bad. Sometimes it would send out so many bad packets, users couldn't log on. Replaced the nic, problem solved. Have you checked that aspect?

Once I placed manually the IP address of the Server-The DC, as DNS number on the client, everything is fine. I am able to log fine from all clients and they can change the passwords upon first login.
