I just read DueE's "Laptop connection to NAM" and I think I am even more confused, but then again, that's not hard to do. I have a Nortel MICS with Norstar Voice Mail 4.0. I need to change the Class of Service, Password Expiry setting to '0'. I did this with 2.0 by attaching to the NAM II serial port with HyperTerminal and accessing the Application Administration menu. This does not seem to work with 4.0. When I attach to the NAM serial port, I get no response on HyperTerminal. We do not have the Norstar Voice Mail Manager option but we do have a network card. I have tried connecting through the network card with no luck. I even have a copy of the Voice Mail Manager software that I tried using, but still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

there is a default network address for the network connection on the NAM of 192.168.110.10 that can be accessed by using the norstar voice mail manaager client software (on your NAM CD) Password is the VM Config password of 120000, 1020000, etc. then Options and class of service.
You can connect the NAM directly to your computer's Network port with a crossover cable or a hub connection to your computer. If you are goint to hook to your network make sure that the above address does not conflict with existing addresses on the network. JerryReeve

Jerry,

I really do appreciate your response. I have tried this once already and it didn't work. I must be doing something wrong. I connected a monitor and keyboard to the NAM, went into TCP/IP configuration and saw that the IP was 192.168.110.10. I connected from my laptop network card to the NAM network card. I changed my network settings on my laptop to reflect the same network (changed IP to 192.168.110.50, Netmask to 255.255.255.0, and gateway to 192.168.110.0. I had link lights on both network cards. I tried connecting through Voice Mail Manager (correct IP and same password that does work with Feature 983). Got error message that it could not connect. I tried pinging 192.168.110.10 and got no reply. I went from a crossover to a straight cable, tried pinging, and again, no reply. What am I doing wrong?

Since you had link lights on both systems it seems like you had the connection right. Did you see activity on those link lights when you were trying to connect? other than that it sounds like you had the correct settings on the PC but i'll admit that I am not the first person to ask on that.
