Hello Everybody!

Hope someone out there has run into this before and can help
me out.

I've just recently taken over IT Duties at a company that's running a NT4PDC Srp6 Box with Exchange 5.5. The previous IT manager did not leave much in the way of information available.. Apparently a pretty ugly parting of the ways.

My dilema is, I can not download any of the email for that account into client software. Be it Microsoft OE or Mozila's thunderbird. I key in the password and it re asks me for it.
I know I am keying the right password, it's the one I log the administrator in with on the box that is running exchange.

User name = administrator
email = admin@company.com
Primary Windows NT account = administrator

I'm stumped, and I need to get this mailbox cleaned out.
has over 260k items.

thanks

Please be a little more specific about what you're trying to do - I'm confused about your mentioning 'downloading'. The normal way of accessing a mailbox on an Exchange server is using a MAPI client, Outlook proper (not Outlook Express).

Are you new to Exchange 5.5 admin? (I'm not judging, just trying to pitch my comments at the right level for you.)

Sorry if my question is a little vague. Yes I am new to exchange mail administration.

Basically, here is the scenario as it stands now. The company has decided to move away from hosting their own email on exchange. Instead they now want their provider doing the hosting of their web and mail domains.

One of the requirements is that the email on the exchange box be saved/archived. I've been looking at tools and stuff, I think my best bet is maybe to use aid4email, except I don't think they are going to ok the purchase of the software.

the Only other thing I can think of is configuring Outlook express on each of their machines to download all email from the server, then import from OE into outlook proper.

I need help here.. As you can tell I am very new to exchange mail admin.

thanks

If you're effectively decommissioning your Exchange server, your best bet you be to archive all existing mailboxes to PST files. These can be viewed without an exchange server, just using Outlook.

There is an MS tool called exmerge that can take your entire Exchange mail database and turn it into individual PSTs, one for each mailbox. It's free and works well.
