I have been working on trying to get an ISDN backup line to work with a Passport 2430 for over 2 months. Nortel's second level support can't seem to figure out why it doesn't work. The answer from them seems to be that it 'works sometimes and doesn't most of the time'. They are having the same problems in their labs. Doesn't anyone do this? I wouldn't think this is uncommon. We've tried new routers, modules, configs, cables. When you pull the T1, it never looks for a backup pool. Never tries to dial. I'm also told that if it did work, it could take five minutes to switch to the backup line. This, of course, is not acceptable.

Should I switch to Cisco? I've never done ISDN backup on a Cisco. The Nortels are very easy to configure, but I can't get it to work.

I have been having the same problems...Did you try the command show isdn bri base? To see if the isdn line is active. I have a passport 2430 as well and I am seeing problems with isdn and PPP connection. It will cut off the primary PPP connection when you enable ISDN backup. If you are using the ISDN line to backup a frame connection it might work, I say might because I have not been able to get the Passport 2430 to work with ISDN either. I have been sucessfull with the old ASN models and the ARN models using dial on demand method for backup and not a backup circuit.
I have not been happy with the Passport 2430 either I have had several of them resetting themselves after 15 minutes and the techs can not recreate the problem in the lab. The
only thing I can think of is that the Passport 2430 is not equipped to handle anymore than one serial connection.
I have been thinking of a new acronym for Nortel....

New orders require technician even longer!

Hi guys,

I have implemented ISDN backup on a 2430 for a frame relay link at a customers site. No problems.

I'm using BayRS 15.20, "circuit backup" not "link backup" (so I don't have to use PPP), "secondary" mode (backup has unique parameters not inherited from primary circuit), and associated dial pools etc.

Only restriction is that the router architecture still only permits a single B channel for backup. 64k is a bit restrictive these days.

Regards,
maj
