Passing Variable back to C?

Hi,
Does anyone know how can i pass a variable from tcl back to C. Eg. me selected a filename in Tcl, and wanting to open the file in C.
M'i suppose to use Tcl_LinkVar or Tcl_SetVar?
Pls enlighten. A simple example will be helpful.
Help will be greatly appreciated.
