Partner Messaging 7.0 to pc connections trouble 3

I have beat myself up for the last few nights on this one and am asking for some help!!!
Touchtonetommy or Jshelton or anyone.
My goal is to connect my laptop directly to a new Partner Messaging 7.0 unit so I can use the Admin software that is installed on my laptop....It's something that i might need for this install. [I DO NOT INTEND TO USE THE UNIFIED MESSAGING]FOR THIS CUSTOMER.
I have searched past posts [ thread 688-534655] and pulled out as much info as possible and have read the step by step instructions that is on the software.
I can talk ok to the Messaging via Hyper Terminal and have set the IP address's so that they are in the same domain as my laptop.....Laptop IP = 192.168.1.102 and then set the Messaging IP address to 192.168.1.103
I have done this with the submask and gateway as well.No problem so far.All addresses are 1 above my laptops and in the same domain.
Now I plug a Cat5 cable into my NIC card on my Laptop and then into the crossover cord adapter that came with the unit and then into the LAN port on the Messaging.
When I open the Messaging 7.0 Administration window on my laptop I now type in 192.168.1.103 as my IP address and sysadmin as my login and then 123456 as my password.
click ok...The screen comes back as " connection to the Partner Messaging cannot be established"
What am I missing??? or doing wrong? I'm running XP home on my laptop.
I have changed the cat5 cable 3 times just for sanity, but NOT the crossover cable from the factory.
Sorry for being long winded on this one.
My wife has hidden all sharp objects in my house for my own protection.

Verify the release software and IP of the Messaging, set CPU to a static IP in same domain as messaging.Try setting your default gateway of your cpu to the IP address of the Messaging.Try it without crossover cable.

All I ever do to program is change the IP of my CPU to a Static address of 10.0.0.43 with a default gateway of 10.0.0.42(default IP of messaging).

I just keep a 2nd PCMCIA network card, with a static IP of 10.0.0.41, subnet of 255.25.255.0, and NO gateway. Always connects to the Messaging products (Merlin and Partner) at 10.0.0.42

1043 & TTT...Thanks for your input..I like TTT's approach but I will have to buy a PCMIA card tomorrow and try it..
I belive my problem is that I was using the IP address info in my laptop for my wireless connection rather than my NIC card info.
I have never used the NIC card in my laptop to connect to the Internet.
When i click on START then RUN then type in CMD then type in IPCONFIG the black box shows my wireless IP address's and below that it shows " Local Area Connection" with all zero's for the IP and subnet address's.
I was programming the Messaging systems IP address's one up from my wireless address. DUMB!!!
I do not know how to change the address's for my local area connection in my NIC card.
Forgive my ignorance..I guess I know just enough to be dangerous but I'm willing to learn.
Can you tell me how to set my NIC card address or am I way off base here.
If not ,I will purchase a card tomorrow and give it a try.

Right click on My Network Places

Right click on Local Area Connection, and select Properties

Click on Internet Protocal (TCP/IP), then press Properties

On the General Tab, you can click the Use the Following IP Address, then fill in 10.0.0.41 in the boxes.

OK that, and you should be able to connect

(remember to set the Messaging back to 10.0.0.42)

If your laptop has a lan port that works then you don't need to buy anything
your getting all zero's because there isn't a dhcp server.
windows xp? ifso then
start,control panel,network connections,right click network card and hit properties,double click internet properties tcp/ip. enter IP , hit ok,and ok .

If you have never used that lan port you may need to disable windows firewall as well.

Ok I have the same issue. However, I understand everything but the connection process. How do i connect this to the "admin" port. I dont see any cable inclued with my sys. I only have a standard cat5 RJ45 cable straight through. What do i need to make this work?

Ok I got that info, thanks a bunch. It seems very straight forward. Problem is, i dont get any connectivity on a straight or cross cable when connected via RJ45. My computer tells me media disconnected. It is statically set for .43, it is tested and working network card. I have switched out cables. Wont even light a port on a switch. HELP!?

Ok, I read the manual and it specifies the "LAN" port. I dont see one, am I missing something? I see an "Admin" port. Are we talking about the same thing?

Are you looking at the Voicemail module or the ACS? If your looking at the voicemail module then what type and what release?

ACS R7 has an ADMIN port.
Partner Messaging R1 R6 R7 all have a LAN port.

Im looking at he ACS itself. Its 7.0, and I have a voicemail card, if that helps. I do see an admin port, and it is RJ45, but doesnt work as a network connection. I dont see any LAN port?

The LAN connection that has been discussed here is on a Partner Messaging voice mail. Sounds like what you've got is a Partner ACS R7 and a Partner Voice Messaging PC Card voice mail.

The admin port you are looking at on the R7 is a serial connection, and can be used with the ACS R7's programming GUI.

Oh, well that chages things a bit. So I guess this is when I have to use a special cable of some sort?

Standard Cat-5 cable, Avaya 355-AF adapter, and DB-25 to DB-9 adapter to get to the serial port of your computer. Look in the FAQ's of the Merlin forum, to find schematics or pinouts of the 355 adapter.
