Partner ACS PC Admin Problem

I've got a Partner ACS 6.0 system with four 308s and a T1 card, and need to use PC Administration to change some settings in the T1 configuration (something you CAN'T do from x10 or x11).

When I set the system up 6 months ago, PC Admin worked fine. Now, I can get the modems to connect, but never get a password box. I have tried slowing the modems down to 2400 and 1200 baud to see if that will do it, but no joy.

I've tried both the internal modem on my IBM Thinkpad (which used to work just fine), and also a brand new US Robotics external v.92 modem (a real serial modem, not some USB winmodem thingy).

I've also tried to connect just with a terminal program, and the system answers at x76 just like it's supposed to, the modems handshake and connect, and I get a "Connect 1200" message, but no garbage or anything from the Partner system.

I've also power cycled the system, and tried different ports on the system, but still no joy. Any suggestions? It seems like the remote card brain isn't talking to the modem anymore, but the ACS modem itself is working just fine...

Wayfmengineer,

I have had all kinds of issues using the internal modem on my IBM. I did the same thing added an external Robotics modem. I have 155 sites in 10 states and even if the pots line is slow I have always connected at 14400. This may seem redundant but I would double check your settings #505 hunt group 6, ext. 76, 1 assigned. I would also check the password. #730. I have had a site that the password defaulted to --------- and would not get to the password prompt. Let me know what you find. I am interested.

Thanks

Fondog2 -

Already checked the hunt group and password, both are set correctly. I can get both the IBM modem and the USR modem to connect at any rate I want (14,400 all the way down to 1200), but regardless of whichever rate I use, I can't get the Partner system to respond. Usually, if I connected to the system with a dumb terminal like Hyperterminal, I'd get some junk back from the system. In this case, I get nothing. That is what is concerning to me, making me think there is a problem with the system itself.

FWIW - I've tried connecting from the inside and the outside of the system, and never one works. :-(

Any other suggestions?

Wayfmengineer,
You are going to have to plug and play. I would first have them dial ext. 76 and see what it does. You can listen to the modem and tell by the sound if it is working correctly. If all seems fine. Then I would ship them a remote access card and have them install then test it again.

I just went thru this a week ago, for what ever reason the internal modems don't seem to work consistantly. I picked up a old us robitcs external modem and no problems, connect every time. It was explained to me that the internal modems rely on windows and hyperterminal to work, the external modems have a "brain" of there own. That may or maynot be true but I do know it works fine everytime now.

Are you guys saying that you can connect an external modem to the partner? I have been trying to do that on a R7 using an external modem with the cable connection going to the Admin port but I cannot get it to work....I would like to know if and how you guys are doing this, and if you can do it for all realeses?

Only the R7's have the serial port for admin, so only those ones can use an external modem instead of the Remote Access card's modem on Ext. 76.

An explanation can be found here:

In the other messages above, it is being recommended to use an external modem with the laptop trying to connect for remote access.
