I have heard that the Partner ACS has heat issues with the modules. Should I leave the carrier cover off?

Yes, I always leave the covers off. I heard that Avaya recommended doing the same, but not sure on that.

Thanks. I like the Partner ACS and I would like to install more of them. What do you think. Are they over all robust with features that most clients want and what about their maintenance issues?

Are there any new carrier redesigns? I know the Euro is on series-2.

If not what would you recommend? I have worked on Merlins, Nortels, NEC's. Most of my systems are preowned.

IVwe gone back to the NEC ds1000/2000 tie/nitusko/nec was my prime line then I went to partner for a short time . after having to buy back a acs6 and replace it with a ds2000 becouse it wouldnt do what the old onyx it replaced did Ive gone back to the nec line

I still support a lot of partners but the progaming is restricive I find the nec lets me solve the custmers requests far better than the partner too often the partner really wont do what the customer wants so we wind up compromising.

I rate the partner well below both the necs and nortels in relaliblity and features

Dave,

The partner acs carrier was re-designed. It is now gray and spaces the cards further apart. I believe some people call it the "slim style" carrier. The cover is kind of a pain to get on and off. Most places I just leave the cover off. My opinion on the Partner system is very high. It's a great system, easy to install and program, very reliable. The newest style 18d phones are not that great....we have had a lot of bad out of the box phones lately, sent a lot of them back.

Although the Partner ACS does have limitations, it does make a good choice as a basic TDM telephone system.

The newer 5-module carrier has better module spacing than the old style carrier. This allows for greater heat dissipation, but the cover can be left off if desired.

Early releases of the Partner ACS R7 did experience production problems that resulted in an unusually high number of out of the box port failures, but those processors have been weeded out of the supply chain by now.

On the install I support, I do have a cooling fan above the carrier to help move the heat along.

The company I work for uses a Nortel Meridian as the office telephone system. I have done some programming on it and find the Partner ACS easier to work with.

partner is easier to program becouse there are less choices . which translates to less you can do for the customer on some more complex systems you can get yourself in trouble if you dont know what your doing as changing one program may affect several others

the partner is modular with modular jacks built into the modules becouse the orginal partner marketing was as self install in fact I beleive it was sold at ATT stores in the mall for the end user to take home and program themselves .

I have a major player in the refurb partner market about a 30 min away I pick up stuff there to save time and shipping and they use a norstar as a office phone system . they buy and sell partner but do it off norstar phones . looks like the company dexman works for does to

why do suppose that is ? [wink]

All of our offices received Nortel phone systems when we had DMS-500 switches installed at all of our Central Offices. Kinda like a package deal.

I read that the Partner was designed with modular plugs so owners of Classic Merlin telephone systems could keep the existing in-house wiring when upgrading to the Partner platform.

True, the Partner has fewer features than the Meridian, but, I would guess that the Merlin Magix is closer to the Meridian than the Partner.

Thanks all. You are helping me on a desision for my future client install.

If you hate the Partner phone system that bad, why do you post on the forum so much?

I post a lot on this forum becouse we see a lot of problems with them

We do suppport them , we have a lot of customers we picked up with them,we work with them on a daily basis

the OP asked for opions on it being robust , maintance issues and features customers want it lacks on all counts in my opion

we have sold a few , upgraded others . I have stacks of defective 206 modules in the back room , we had a lot of bad mls phones untill we found a source for the circuits .
I dont see this kind of thing with other systems on the scale we do with partner

ive always felt a certain amount of the maintence issues was designed in for lucent /avaya to sell maintence contracts MLS flex circuits are a prime example. have a mintence contract ? mls phone goes bad avaya sends you another one they get yours back spend 10 putting a ciruit in and buffing it out then its ready for the next customer

206 cards and MLS phones are OLD, it's no wonder you see them failing. Upgrade them Skip! I have not ran into the mls circuit problems, we still have a ton of mls phones out there. Most of the old 206 cards develop static in a port or two but there are still plenty of them out there.

The new 5 slot carriers are much better in the heat dispersment then the other style. Personaly if its installed in a already warm climate I would leave the cover off. The ACS are a great system very flexable and easy to manage. To bad they Dropped the Magix line the nextstep up.

Would you suggest changing an established installation that I have taken over to the newer carriers? I assume that the sames modules can be installed into the newer carrier. Its that correct?

The new carrier was designed to handle modules for the Partner ACS system. So the ACS processor, 308EC, 012E, 400 EC, PMVS, PM and others would work.

If the customer doesn't mind paying for the new carrier, then everything should be fine.

Unlike the older carrier you have a choice of cover on or cover off.

Dave,

You can install Partner Plus, Partner II, and Partner ACS modules in the new carriers.

The old ACS processors are the main module you have to worry about with heat. Lucent/AVAYA made a poor power supply, it heats up the circuit board next to the CR105 diode and in time fails by either blowing up or making noise/static on all ports. If you ever replace an older ACS processor, open the bad module up and look at the power supply, you will see CR105 printed on the board. Does it look burnt or did it get hot? More than likely yes.

yes, that is exactly what happened to this acs proc. that diode blew up. it had a big scorth mark next to it.

I sent it into Metroline and they got it back to me in about 1 week. They do a good job. They About how long should I expect this repaired proc. to last.

Do you suggest a more reliable acs proc. module?

The latest revision ACS processors have reworked power supplies to help prevent that from happening.

You can't go wrong with an R7 or a new R6. (Some refurbished R6's could have started out as an older revision with an old power supply, upgraded to the R6 software level).
