Hello,
I have a new machine w/2 physical hard drives(SATA) and I would like to know the best way to partition RHAS 3.0. I'm going to install Oracle 10G on this box. I am going to have the following partitions, but I'm not sure which should go on drive 1 and which should go on drive 2.
/
/boot
/home
/oracle
/tmp
/usr
/var

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

may be off topic here,
but Oracle suggests that you distribute your Oracle files on both disks. They have a set of rules for this. The objective is to make it easier if you have to recover your database in case one drive dies.
Of course there is no need to do so if your Oracle is just for testing and learning, but it is a good idea in a productive system.

Yes, the Oracle files will be distributed across both disks, but I was wondering about the optimal solution for the Linux install and the oracle install locations. The redo, data, & control files for Oracle should be distributed across both disks.

I came up with this because you only mentioned one /oracle filesystem;
shouldn't there be at least two for Oracle?

And then it depends on how big your database will become.
One guess would be that Oracle datafiles will cover at least half of your disk capacity; so I would suggest:
One disk for operating system (filesystems and swap), users and part of Oracle,
the other for Oracle datafiles.

If you read the Oracle DBA Guide from Oracle Press they start with the nirvana of disk allocation having a seperate spindle for every file that Oracle uses, but that's 20 disks and no one really does that. They then work backwards to a 12 spindle solution then down to a four spindle and that's as low as they go.

As it is with two disks, you've got to put swap on one and that's going to make it miserable for Oracle. Unless you're going to consider putting at least two more disks in the machine just stick it wherever you want it, it's going to work but you're never going to get a high performance layout without 5 disks.
