Here is the deal: i want to install nt 4.0 server as a bdc. my server has 4 hard drives of 18gb each connected to a raid controller. i want to do raid 5 with an online spare. all this is fine i can use smart start and configure the raid and install nt fine. the problem is that the max partition size is 4gb. How do i get around this or how can i resize the partition. i want to have one partition with a size of 36gb. (3 each 18gb raid 5 equals 36 gb usable space). The reason that it is a problem is that i plan on promoting this bdc to a pdc and then upgrading to w2k server. Any ideas

thanks

Nope, you are out of luck.

With NT4, you can only format to 4096MB, due to limitations of the FAT16 filesystem. Even if you choose NTFS, it is formatted to FAT first.

If you choose to format the disks through another boot or a different, running version, of NT/Win2K, the max boto partition size is (I believe) 8GB. Any bigger causes problems.

Regardless, I would recommend that 4Gb should be enough for any Domain Controller or AD server's boot partition. Use the D Drive for programs and data, or better still, use a file server. Cheers,
Sam

Hi all,

1) the maximum size for FAT is 4086MB (typo?)
:)

2) You will be asking for trouble by having 1 big partition
I would have either a 2048MB or 4086MB FAT C drive & rest as D drive & install everything to D drive.
