Problem:
I tried to resize my harddrive (C:) using Partition Magic 8.0. There was an error during the resize and it never finished. Upon rebooting, I got a bluescreen and was not able to boot past the OS loading screen until I ran ChkDsk from a boot CD. Now the OS does not work correctly.

Some aspects of how the malfunctioning OS operates that might be indicators of what's wrong:

- Only around 22 processes run after startup. Normally it's around 50.
- In windows task manager, under Processes tab, no "User Name" is listed for processes where it would normally say something like "SYSTEM" or my "USER_NAME".
- Appears programs that use Microsoft .NET Framework do not work ~ cause .NET error when run.
- Taskbar doesn't start automatically. I had to right click the tiny bit of taskbar that was showing and select a Toolbar (like Address) and then resize the toolbar to see it. I couldn't resize it without choosing a toolbar.
- Minimizing an open application does not show up on taskbar.
- Unable to Copy/Paste or drag & drop files and folders.
- When I open some programs (such as Help & Support Center), they do not start. I get the hourglass and can see the .exe process start up in the task manager, but then it disappears and no program starts.
- Says Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupted.
- I think that some system services fail to start (certclas.inf, autoexec.bat, shmgrate.exe)

What I've tried so far:

I have a boot CD (Hiren's Boot CD v9.3) with recovery apps, but I couldn't effectively use most of the programs on it; I would select an app and it would create a drive (R:) using 50MB of RAM space to run the app. The app would load properly, but my neither my mouse nor my keyboard would respond (no mouse cursor/ NO responsive keyboard buttons). My keyboard worked fine, however, in the Windows Setup/Startup screens.

In desperation, I tried to run random recovery applications on the boot CD to see if my keyboard would work for any of them until I found one that ran ChkDsk /F automatically without input from me, so I was able to run that without using mouse/keyboard. The ChkDsk found numerous errors and attempted to correct them - I'll go into detail about this later.

The ChkDsk corrections allowed me to boot my original malfunctioning OS, but with strange results:

Many system services no longer boot and make it so that only certain programs function properly, and also I can no longer do simple functions such as copy-pasting a folder/file. I also can't get online using that OS. The program problem that is irking me the most is that I can't run System Restore - it says "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again." I complied and restarted, but still got the same message. I'm doubtful that a system restore would fix a partition problem, but if it could, a solution that enables me to use System Restore might be all I need.

I then installed an alternate OS to see if a new OS would run correctly (and allow me internet access). It did, so now I have 2 OS's installed on my main drive C: (Win XP Media Center, Win XP Pro x64 Edition). The new OS functions (almost) normally. For example, as in my old OS, the new one won't play sounds. I think I just have to update/change drivers, so I don't think the problems with this OS are related to the partition error.

Some things I've noticed/remember that may be helpful:
- A check of the D: partition (my HP_RECOVERY partition) produces an error that says, "File size does not match FAT allocation for file."
- One of the applications I tried to run from the Boot CD auto-mounted something to the D Drive. My D Drive was occupied by the HP_RECOVERY partition that came pre-installed on the computer. I think this auto-mounting caused the D partition to become a "hidden" partition. I unhid the partition, but I'm not sure if data/recovery points were lost because of the auto-mounting.
- I have many recovery point folders (named RP###) from prior backups and ones that I recovered using Undelete software. The folders contain files named AO + letters and numbers and are of types .ini, .exe, .msi, .reg, .nfo, and .dll. The folders also contain files named change.log and RestorePointSize. If you know of a way that I could utilize these restore points, it might be helpful.
- I also Norton Ghosted PART of my C drive a week or 2 ago, so if I need files from that time I MAY have them - I just don't know which ones I might need or else I'd list them.
- When ChkDsk was run by the Boot CD, it found a lot of errors. It said something about invalid security ID's for hundreds of files. I think that to fix this it reassigned security ID's.
- I think the ChkDsk logged its actions in bootex.log. Here are a few lines that were repeated over and over and I thought are important:

From bootex.log
Numerous lines of the following:

"Deleted corrupt attribute list entry with type code 128 in file 9."

"Unable to locate attribute of type 0x80, lowest vcn 0x##L, instance tag 0x0 in file 0xLL#L."

"The attribute of type 0x80 and instance tag 0x0 in file 0x9 has allocated length of 0x14e2000 instead of 0x261000."

"Unable to locate attribute with instance tag 0x0 and segment reference 0x500000000db9e. The expected attribute type is 0x80."

"Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, $SDS) from file record segment 56222."

"The attribute list entry with attribute of type 0x80 and instance tag 0x5 should be after attribute of type 0x80 and instance tag 0x0."

"The security data stream is missing from file 0x9."
"The security data stream size 0x0 should not be less than 0x40000."

"Repairing the security file record segment.
Deleting an index entry with Id 256 from index $SII of file 9."
**Like 500 times**

"Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file 0."
**For files 0 - 1238**

So, if you think you can fix the problem with just the above info, please let me know. The rest of the post will be specifics about the program errors I get on the malfunctioning OS and computer specs information. The system info was all obtained while using the original malfunctioning OS.

Let me know if you need any more info from me. THANK YOU for your help!!!!

Thanks again for your time!! I wasn't exactly sure what info you would need on my system so I probably included a lot of irrelevant info - sorry!

To clarify - none of my data seems corrupted. I haven't found any files yet that give me an error when I try to open them (besides program .exe files). I have been reading a lot of other partition resize error threads and most of their data gets deleted or corrupted, so I just want to point out that this has not happened in my case.

Assuming all your personal data is intact, and you have install media for your apps, suggest a backup, wipe and reinstall (or restore from recovery partition/CD/DVD) probably the most effective way forward. You could spend a long time trying to troubleshoot what exactly the failed resize has done to your installation - and may still never be able to fix it. You could try a repair reinstall (if you have install CD) - but again, without knowing the exact nature of the problem, that might just compound it.

I doubt this will do much for you under the circumstances but as you asked about restore points and recovery you can read this article.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

I am not familiar with Partition Magic, I use Terabyte Unlimited software for such operations.
Does Partition Magic come with some type of recovery software for these type of disasters?

Call Partition Magic support. I had a problem when in the middle of the resizing, I lost power. The support people spent over an hour on the phone with me. They started out saying it was possible that recovery would not be possible, but with their help, I recovered a lot of data, but not all. It's worth a try.

Good Luck,
