I have upgraded from W2k to XP home and had partitioned a small area for the operating system (thought it would also be enough for XP). What i have been getting is error message "disk space low", even though I have huge amount of space on my D: drive.

Is there anyway to increse the first partition size. Or are their any other ways around this problem (moving paging file and internet cache onto D:)

If i do need to move operating system, can this be moved onto another partition easily or is a reinstall needed?

Try moving "my documents" "temp i-net files" to D:
and set the page file on D: (or reduse the size of it)
Alse searc for crash dump files and delete them.
(*.dmp)
c:\documents and settings\"username"\local settings\Application data\microsoft\outlook

Any *.pst or *.ost file here can be copied to d:
and deleted on c: (for then to be copied back later)

where can you get patition magic? is it freeware?

There are several options, including those suggested by others.

My own stratgey is to not tamper with the operating system partition.
Rather, I would move a number of folders to another drive/partition including:
My Documents
Internet Files
Temp Files
Download Files
And if you have two drives, move most of the swap (page) file to another drive

In addition, I would install my own programs in a folder called:
"Our Programs" which I place on the "D:" drive.

This then scavanges enough space for all Win/XP Home.

By the way it works as I have an 8 GB C: drive and a 40 GB hard drive allocated as D:, E: and F:.

In F: are the copies of many of my source program CD's to allow me to do updates and reloads without loading the CD itself. In some cases, I change the associated "xxx.ini" file to point to the F: drive and "folder name" wherein the source is located. Some programs are smart and remember (e.g.: WIN/XP and Office/XP), but some other need a pointer.
