Hi All

Does anyone know of an open source product that is free to partition a WD My Passport Essential external drive. It is 500GB and I want to break it up into 2 250GB drives.

Any recommendations on whether it should be Fat32 or NTFS...

Many thanks Tee

Not open source, but free. I've not used on a external drive, but succesfully did a XP drive

If you're using Windows can't you just use its built-in Disk Management tool (Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management)?

As for FAT32 vs NTFS: it depends what you want to use it with. If everything you're going to hook it up to supports NTFS then use that - only use FAT32 if you have to. FAT32 is less efficient and less robust but more widely compatible.

Of course depends if the drive already has data on it...

Even then you can use the Windows tool, if you're using Windows 7 and if it has less than 250GB of data on it. The version in Win 7 (and possibly Vista) can shrink partitions, allowing you to create another partition in the empty space.

Hi All

Many thanks for your replies. I did not know that Win 7 had that feature. Great I will try to do it now.

Thanks again.
