Is it possible to have a parent and child site on the same subnet?

background info:
we are planning to set up our site structure as follows:

site 1 = 1200 users
parent primary site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

Child site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

site 2 = 300 users
child site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

site 3 = 150 users
child site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

site 4 = 300 users
child site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

site 5 = 200 users
child site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

site 6 = 100 users
child site, w2k sp3, sms sp4, sql 2000, swm database
software metering server, w2k sp3.

We understand software metering will only support 500 users per server and 1250 with all the hotfixes in place so therefore have gone for two software metering servers on the largest site. is this the correct way to do it because so far in the test lab the parent site becomes a client of the child site?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks
