parallel port access under winXP

Is there anyway to access the parallel port from vc 6 or vc.net without having to have to buy kernel mode .dlls.

I would think one should be able to use the win32 api?

I know that the CreateFile can be used to access the serial ports. I have not looked, but have a feeling it is also used to access the parallel port. Look it up on-line in the msdn website.
