I have a table for a catalog that makes up the major content of the publication. This table is spread out over 24 pages in threaded containers. It is linked to an external spreadsheet. I linked the excel spreadsheet with no formatting.
In InDesign, I first created the paragraph styles for the text, then Cell styles then the table style. I can verify that the font style is correctly specified in the paragraph styles but when I apply the styles I get incorrect formatting. It seems to pick up some of the formatting, like text color, but the font is always Arial Italics instead of the font I specified no matter how many times I try to edit it. Also the Table is displaying borders I didnt specify. Where did I go wrong?

"when I apply the styles I get incorrect formatting"

...ensure you don't have a character style applied, select all cells and ensure "none" is used as a character style, as the paragraph style is controlling the font used...

"Also the Table is displaying borders I didnt specify"

...ensure the cell style doesn't conflict by having a stroke applied in the "stroke and fills" option of the cell style...

Thanks apepp for your speedy response. Although the problem doesnt seem to be completely solved, your suggestions led me to discover that there were (local?)overrides in place complicating matters. So I spent some time hunting them all down.
