Paragraph Styles mystery

OK... I'm really enjoying using InDesign (just switched) but the weird thing is...

I'm working on a 60 page document that originated in Word that I "placed" in InDesign. I apply a paragraph style I created, but here and there the font refuses to switch. The formats will change (ie: color, indenting, drop caps, whatever...) but the type won't switch. When I highlight the bad type I can manually switch it to the font I want (Adobe Jenson), but then the style sheet appends a "+" to that type selection... when I click again on the prargraph style title, the "+" disappears but the exact same type switches back to the same wrong font (Arial)!

The original Word doc was in New Times Roman... so I can't figure this one out.

Anyone else experience this?
Got any solutions?
I'm sure Microsoft's Word is somehow xcausing this problem...

Paragraph styles and character styles can conflict - - are you certain that a character style is not selected for this text as well as the paragraph style?

Why is everyone in this forum responding to me as picklefish?

No character styles applied... only paragraph style is applied... I think something must be up in the Word doc original

Well here's my workaround... I went back to the original Word doc, opened it, re-saved it as Word 4 for Mac... highlighted & copied it in Word and pasted it in InDesign AFTER deleting the misbehaving type completely from InDesign... NOW it takes the para styles

I knew it was Word's fault.
