Case 1
I have 2 files -- one english, one french. I set up the english first with all my formatting. Everything is fine.
I duplicate the english file, deleted the english text and "placed" the french Word file.
My paragraph style for the "heads" is 8 on 8 Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold (h77) with space above of 1 pica. The "body" is 7 on 7 Helv Neue Cond Regular (h57) with space above of 2 pt.
I highlighted all the french text and made it "body". Then I went through the individual lines and applied the "heads" style.
The highlighted text (heads) has the extra space I want but . . . the text is still 7 (on 8) h57. I do not get the 8 pt bold. I have to go through one more step and apply the Character Style for the bold (which is h77 with the size and leading left blank). Then I get the 8pt h77.
Case 2
I have an english file with paragraph style "body" of 7 on 7 h57.
I duplicate the file, delete the english and "place" the french. Highlight all text and apply "body". All the text is now Helv Neue Cond Reg Italic (h58) NOT the Roman (h57) that I asked for. Again, I need to do that second step, highlight all the text and make it h57.
This problem seems to happen consistently. I cannot duplicate a file, place text and use the paragraph styles that I had set up originally.
I have tried creating a new paragraph style (with a different name) but I am still unable to get the text to appear correctly.
Any thoughts?

I am picking up the text from a Word document. There is no character style applied. I highlighted all the text (case 2) to apply "body" style. Why would the body now be all italic instead of roman when it worked perfectly when I first set up the styles on my original file? I have tried highlighting everything, choosing "Basic Paragraph" (which works) and then returning to "body". I still get the italic and there is no "plus" sign beside the style.

I've been on vacation and this is my first opportunity to respond. I now make sure that the paragraph style is "basic" and ALSO that the character style is "none". I've been able to duplicate a file and replace text without all the extra steps I needed to do before. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
