Hi
Today a user deleted some of his files from his pc over a smb drive on the linux server. The filesystem is ext2. Is there any tool to recover the file?

Thanx in advance
/Alexander

Simple answer to this question is no, only from backup tape

Well, actually, the answer is "most likely no", but with a lot of work, it's possible.
You would have to use the "dd" command to dump the hard drive contents to a file (which would require a seperate larger hard drive) and scan through the file to see if you can recover anything. This assumes, of course, that the disk was not written to since the incident or that you're extraordinarily lucky and the computer decided not to write to any of the sectors the deleted data was on. If the files were plain text, you may have some luck.. if they were binary, it's doubtful you'll get anything out of this procedure.
