Paging file question 3

Hi All,

I'm installing a new server and partitioned the 2 logical drives as c=4gig and d=136GIG. The memory is a gig of ram so the paging file is set at 1024. Of course this paging file is huge and uses most of the disk space. I would like to move the paging file from c to d but wanted to ask if there are any known problems related to moving the paging file from c to d? My concern is when upgrading this to Windows2000 Server that the install would need to see the paging file?

If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, or microsoft articles on this I would appreciate.

Never had any problems moving the pagefile to another drive also the future upgrade to 2000 will also find the pagefile on the d drive. Just make sure you move it by using the Control Panel, System, Performance as you won't be able to move the file using Windows Explorer.

in order to keep the debug option on a system crash youi will need to keep a small paging file on the C drive. The page file should be set to 1.5 times memory on the d drive. Moving the paging file is a recommended thing as it will speed up the system a bit. Also ensure you set min and max to the same size to ensure you get a Contiguous allocation of disk space.

Thanks for that info. The paging file is set on the c drive for 1024= min and 1074 for maximum. When I move this from C to D do I keep this setting or would you recommend a different setting? If you say it should be set to 1.5 then the maximum setting would be 1536. Would you recommend to set the paging file for d to 1024 and 1536?

What should the paging file be on C? You mention a small paging file for c. What would you recommend?

I believe you will need a 2Mb pagefile on the C drive to use the debug option, would set the pagefile on d to be what the system recommends though there are a lot of different views on this .

I think MS recommends RAM + 11MB on NT servers and RAM * 1.5 on Win 2K servers. It's been a while since I had to know that.

I have found that you will have the least problems if you go with the Recommeded for both Initial and Maximum settings.

I have seen NT servers throw the "Your system is running low on virtual memmory" warning even when the Initial and Maximum settings were higher than the Recommended setting and there was abundant free space on the hard drive.

What do you do when you see that "Your system is running low on virtual memory" when you see this message and you have the paging setup properly what causes this message?

"Your system is running low on virtual memory" - usually you have to reboot the server when this happens. So it's best if you never see the message!!!!!

It is mem+11 Mb as a min but 1.5 mem is the max size and gives best performance. Also 2Mb is the correct size on the C drive teh rest palce on the d drive and all should be OK.

The virtual memory error is ficed by rebooting. remember you can always look at the task manger or even better the performance monitor to have a look a the page file useage.
