Has anyone been able to get the upam to work properly when connected to an analog extension set for paging? It would appear that there is no contact closure provided in the extension port itself.

If there is no contact closure then there can be no confirmation or pre announcement tone. The upam works great for analog line.

Using an Analog port for Paging Port:
In Manager, click on the Extension icon to display the list of extensions.
Double-click on the Extension that will be used for the paging port.
In the Extn tab, set the Equipment Classification to Paging Speaker.
Set Caller Display type to Off. Click OK. Extension icon should change.
Click on User Icon to display list of Users. In the user tab, set the Name to
Paging or similar to indicate the function. In the voicemail tab, untick Voicemail On.
Page port must have an off-hook condition, otherwise you will get a busy when calling page Extension. (You may have to use a 500 ohm to a 20k Ohm resistor across the page port.) (3 to 5 watt). I usually buy a cheap phone and go off hook and leave off hook across the page port.
Reboot system to receive off-hook condition
The Universal Paging Access Module (UPAM) is recommended to use as a paging Amplifier.
Analog Port Spec: Off-Hook current = 25ma Ring Voltage = 40v rms
REN = 2
System Short Code: *78 202 DialPaging 0
For all paging over zone and external paging speakers, add extension 202 to the paging group 400 for example. Then when you dial the short code to Zone 400 (*24 or *400 for example) The persons who is paging will be heard over phones and the over head paging system.

UPAM connection:
Connect Ext. 202 to UPAM Phone system input.
Connect Paging output to input of Amplifier.
Mode switch settings:
1 = off
2 = off
3 = off
4 = on
5 = on
Aux switch settings:
1 = off
2 = off
3 = on
4 = on
5 = on
Dial *78, you will hear confermation tone, start speaking. Hang up when finished.

Also, no power supply is needed for UPAM when using Extension port. You do need it for Trunk port paging.

Hmmm.. I have done all of that except for perhaps the Aux switch settings on the UPAM. I know that I had 4 and 5 on for sure but not sure if I had 3, 4 and 5 on.

You can actually page if you connect the extension directly to the amp but it doesn't appear to work so well through the UPAM via extension.

Perhaps I have a bad UPAM but Bogen did say that pins 3 and 6 of the RJ45 input on the UPAM must be the contact closure.

According to the engineering toolkit pins 2 and 6 are bell and 3 is not used.

I will try it again with a fresh UPAM. Thanks.

You do not need a UPAM for paging with a POTS ext for paging.

WMT-1A isolating transformer connected across the 600 ohm input, out thru the rca, to AUX1 input (hi-Z) on amp. This WMT-1A drops down the voltage that the POT port sends out. single pair termination form POT port.

Analog user VM off
analog ext settings paging speaker, Caller display type, OFF.

single pair connection to WMT-1A across 600 ohm input, rca to aux input(hi-Z?) on paging amp. This item comes with the UPAM, but it should be available by itself. Avaya or Bogen should have it. Your amp, may or may not have a Hi-Z input. This has been working for months with no known issue. I do not recall if it required a reboot.

You do not always get what you pay for, but you never get what you do not pay for.

True. I can connect to the amp using an extension with no problem. The problem is using an extension set for paging AND connection to a upam solely for the preannouncemnt and confirmation tones.

It would appear that the pots port does not provide for contact closure when set as a paging port. The upam needs the contact closure in order to provide for preannounce and confirmation tones.

WMT-1A is available in the UK from RS Components, part number 2508714476

We also use the same solution as aarenot, just placing the WMT-1a between the POTS port and the PA

If the UPAM doesn't put a delay in, then it will be fine; if it does delay, then you would have an 'echo' effect.

Assuming no delay; just create a group of the phones that you want to page to, and also the Analogue Extension that the paging system is assigned to; it will come out of the digital & pa system together.

With the above set up which I mentioned, which does not use a UPAM.
To page
1) overhead, page the pots ext that has the WMT-1A
2) to page phones only no overhead, create a group with phones only in it, and page the group, page will go over only the phones.
3) to page overhead and phones, create group with pots ext connected thru WMT-1A, and other exts to be paged in it. page that group, and it goes over both.

You do not always get what you pay for, but you never get what you do not pay for.
