I've been using PageMaker for years, and I am not getting ready to purchase InDesign for my company.

Should I purchase the InDesign PageMaker edition or start fresh and purchase a new copy of InDesign?

Should I build from an application that is not native to OSX or purchase an application that is native to OSX?

Thanks for your help.

InDesign PageMaker Edition and a new copy of InDesign are essentially the same thing. Both run on OSX. The PageMaker Edition simply has plugins to mimic PageMaker's tricks.

What do you mean start fresh? InDesign PageMaker Edition is native OSX.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm questioning why there is such a great difference in price.
I am under the impression that InDesign PageMaker edition builds on your current version of PageMaker, kind of like an update.

That's why I'm so confused.

I think we should probably just purchase the whole enchilada and be done with it.

InDesign PageMaker Edition kills off your old PageMaker: it is not an update. You can retire the PM application entirely. You don't even need it on your machine to install. It is not an upgrade from PageMaker... it is a totally new software (InDesign).

If you mean whole enchilada as the full version of InDesign that does not require a previous license of ID or PM, don't. The PageMaker Edition 'upgrade' is the full enchilada.

What prices are we looking at? The jump from PageMaker is cheaper then buying a copy of InDesign straight off the shelf because Adobe is honoring user loyalty to PageMaker.

But you said that you don't even need PM on your comp to install - so why doesn't everyone just buy InDesign PM Edition? It's cheaper and the full enchilada apparently.

I'm in the same boat as debenedc....

Thanks, PTD

I'm guessing, but not sure, that you might need the registration number from your old PM. Adobe has a similar promotion for Photoshop users who want to get the whole Creative Suite. $750 gets you the premium CS if you have a currently licensed version of PS. That's just a little more than buying ID by itself.

If you have PM, you're probably better off getting ID PM edition, as that includes the PM Plugin Pack (as does CS premium). It has a few handy things in there that don't come with ID by itself.

The ID in the pagemaker edition is not an "upgrade" because ID uses an entirely different code base from PM.

When I said 'The PageMaker Edition 'upgrade' is the full enchilada', I meant you get the entire InDesign program. It does not augment Pagemaker: It replaces it.

The Pagemaker edition is an upgrade version that requires a previous license for Pagemaker. While you do not need Pagemaker on your computer at the time of install, you will be asked for the serial number of your copy of Pagemaker.

So to upgrade to InDesign CS from Pagemaker, you pay US$349.00.

If you do not own Pagemaker and you want the same software, you would buy InDesign CS for US$699.00 and then pay an additional US$49.00.

If you already own a license of Pagemaker, the InDesign CS Pagemaker Edition is best. Simply imagine this as if you are upgrading to Pagemaker 8.

and then pay an additional US$49.00.

...if you want the Pagemaker plugins that come in the Pagemaker edition.

The upgrade that Adobe is offering is an upgrade in license, not an upgrade in Pagemaker software. Adobe is moving you to a completely new application but calling it an upgrade to make it sound simple. It's simple, right? [bigsmile]

I would suggest getting the Pagmaker Edition, as the added featrues are quite nice, its the littel things that you may use in pagemaker that it wont have, but again are nice if you need them.
