Hi.

My "pagefile.sys" is growing, and I dont know watta do!!
How do I change it and what does it, really, do??

Thanx

Pagefile.sys is your 'swap file' or paging file. NT holds data in swap files to speed access and improve performance. As you work, pages of data are swapped in and out as needed to provide optimal performance (in theory.)

To change the size of your page file, go to Control Panel | System | Performance | Change. The best size of your swap file depends on what you do with your PC. For standard systems I recommend setting initial and maximum size to twice your RAM size.

What are your settings set to? Min? Max? Windows Handling?

How big is it presently?

your page file just doesn't grow, initially when you first install the OS, the default page file is created, and the size stays as it is, then depending on the usage of the system we designate the size of the page file.

what page file is and what it does is expalined very well by johncurtis.

its recommended that the min size of page file be 12MB more than the physical RAM installed in the system, the maximum can be twice or thrice of the RAM, depending on what ur system is used for and on the availabilty of space in the partition where the page file is. you can put the page file in any partition you want, but some, maybe around 10MB should be allotted in the drive where WIN NT is installed.

alloting too much for paging is not a good idea, since excessive paging can slow down the system, so if the system gets too slow then reduce the amount of poage file desinated and viceversa, hope this helps.

In Win NT you can change the page file size from, Control Panel |System|Performance tab| change button.

Actually, the page file does grow, but only within the bounds set in control panel (see above). We make it standard practice to set the initial and max values at the same number, so the system doesn't have to waste processing cycles growing or shrinking the page file. Also, as indicated above consider moving most of the page file to a seperate partition from the one NT is installed on.
