I have a report I want to break based on the first character of a field (Diagram below). Any ideas?

If the report is based on a query, just add a column to the query, labeled BreakCharacter (for lack of a better name), and use the mid function to select only the first character of the field in question. If your report is based on a table, you'll have to create a query that selects everything and then add the aforementioned column. Either way you can then break on this new column in your report.

If you are creating an Access report, look at the Sorting and Grouping options.

1) Add your column to the Field/Expression list.

2) Select Group On: Prefix Characters.

3) Type 1 in Group Interval to indicate one character.

4) In the Group Header properties, choose Force New Page: Before Section. Terry L. Broadbent
