I wonder if anyone can help.

I have set up an NT Server running IIS 4.0 and Exchange 5.5 acting as a BDC in a domain of only two servers, it and the PDC.

I configured Outlook Web Access within Exchange and it seems to be working fine. I use NT challenge and response security to authenticate user's logins to the e-mail system. However, when you try to attach a file to the e-mail message, it all goes pear-shaped.

Either one of two things happens, the first is the only one I have personally witnessed but apparently the second happens as well:

1. As soon as you attach the file, you get prompted for a username and password to log into the server (a popup box). It doesn't matter what you enter here, it doesn't accept it.

2. The "flying files" from folder to folder graphic just runs and the ASP page eventually times out.

The client machines are all running Windows 98 and it is all the machines that this happens on. They have quite complex security policies implemented but it doesn't matter which user you login to the network as: it does the same thing.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Jamie.

I would definately have SP3 installed if you don't already. If you do then I would be looking into the security settings on the exchange folders under IIS.

SRG,

Thanks for the advice, I already have the NT Server on SP6, the Exchange Server is a different matter, I think it's on SP2. I have trawled through the security settings for the folder and if I change the security from Challenge and Response to Basic Authentication, I am prompted for a user and password about 6 times but they do actually work and I can send an attachment successfully. This leads me to believe that it must be something to do with the Challenge and Response.

Jamie.

I would absolutely agree with the response to apply SP3 to Exchange 5.5!! There are many strange things that get fixed in Outlook Web in SP3 and far to detailed to try to explain. If after you apply this service pack and the problem exists you might dig deeper into the security aspect, however, having a problem attaching a file seems unrelated to something to do with security, IMHO.

David

Thanks to both of you.

I'll give SP3 a go and tell you how I get on...

Jamie.
