Overwhelmed by relaying attempts

I get thousands of attempts for my sendmail to relay spam. I don't, oc course, but its taxing the machine and the network. Is there any defence ?

Also, when I start sendmail from command line using startsrc it starts and works, but it shows lssrc as inoperative ...

How you are starting sendmail.I think you are not issuing correct syntax.
Please reply ASAP. Baesd on that I will give my advice.

I believe you are responding to the second part:

I start this way

startsrc -s sendmail -a "-bd -q30m"

It's AIX 4.3.3
