I am considering a position which involves the use of Lotus Notes. I am looking for a quick overview of what this software does. Is it similar to Microsoft Outlook?

I have never used outlook, but I don't think there is a product quite like Lotus Notes. I might suggest going to the lotus.com, lotus411.com. You may also want to check IBM's web site. There are white papers that will be useful.
Using Notes you can create simple to complex applications.

Notes also comes equipped with templates that can be used pretty much as is.

Notes is equipped with various levels of security and accesses.

Notes is a great product. If you have the opportunity to learn it. Take advantage.
notes.net is an awesome site to check as well. More than Outlook, it's like exchange too...but let me warn you..if you are used to relational databases, you will hate this software. It's a good one, but only for doing what it was truly designed to do. Those of us who think we are the software programming wizards and take it beyond its realm have been burned...BAD.

Lesli is correct. Notes was created for big businesses, for the purpose of group computing and collaboration. Notes does not do realtional work. You wouldn't purchase Notes to create relational dbs, but if you want to create applications for to perform many of your business's day to day tasks, including mailin dbs, discussion dbs, document libraries, workflow, Notes is it.

We have about 1500 production level Notes applications, and another 800 active applications just below production.

Try it you;ll like it.
