Hi guys, quick question, I have a relativly new PC (about 4 months old). Spec is:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66GHz)
2gb Ram
160GB SATA 2 Drive
MB is Intel DG31PR.

I have noticed some times the PC tends to slow down a little, it does'nt crash but just hangs a little doing simple tasks. I know this can be caused by over heating so downloaded SISoftware Sandra. The MB Temp was at about 76c and the processor at 60 something. I knew this was too high so bought 2 new 120mm case fans and fitted them in, made sure all cables were out of the way and so on. The temperature has come down a tad but not much. I am writing this and running Sandra enviroment monitor and my MB temp is
68 and the CPU is running at 50. Is this right or should I be looking at better cooling solutions. The freezing has not really changed.

I would'nt mind spending more money on cooling if the PC was an absolute power house but it is not even that fast lol.

Any advice appreciated

Rob

SetsunaMudo,

If it were my rig I would definitely swap out the CPU cooler with a Thermaltake V1 or Zalman CNPS-9500 or 9700. While you're at it, make sure the surfaces of the CPU and cooler are clean, and use a grain-of-rice size daub of Arctic Silver 5. Spread the paste using your finger inside a plastic bag. A thin, even coat is what you're after.

You could also get a second opinion by purchasing a fan controller with temperature sensors and place them around the MB Northbridge cooler. It's impossible to get an accurate temp reading on the CPU, so take your readings with a grain of salt. Is the air exiting your case warm? Hot???

I have heard of either the MB or CPU's thermals being off, but BOTH being off is not likely, and could need attention. Yes, this would cause the symptoms you describe.

I own that same system. I built it last year. Mine never get over 32c. These Intel Core 2 Duo are one of the coolest running CPU's I have ever built. I also run the stock fan and heat sink. I would remove that heatsink and do as the other poster said. I use artic silver compound . It has always worked good for me.

Excellent Thanks for the help guys, looks like i'm off into town today to find a new CPU cooler.

I shall let you know results.
