Outlook's IMS vs E2K's IMS

I have a install of Exchange 2k that does not host nor can it host internet email.

However, there are several clients that have Outlook2000 with Internet Mail Service installed on them.

This situation worked fine before, when they had Exch 5.5, because we didn't have IMS Installed on the server.
Now with E2k, the mail messages "sometimes" decide to travel out through the Exchange Server instead of going through the internet mail service on the local workstations. I've configured the delivery options so that Internet Mail is BEFORE the exchange mail, but some messages still come back from the Exchange reporting non-delivery.

Can this configuration work at all with Exchange 2000? I can setup a SMTP sending server on a proxy computer that is there locally, but it would take a a bit of time to do that and I was hoping for a "simpler" solution.

Thanks

Joshua

I guess this must either be a SIMPLE problem and everyone is saying "DUH" when they read it, or it's not a simple problem and no one knows...

what is it that you'd like to accomplish? I'm not sure I understand the issue....

My exchange server keeps trying to send internet mail out. It does not have access to the internet.

My outlook clients get about have of the internet emails they send bounced back by the exchange server saying that it can't deliver the internet email message. Now those outlook clients have the Outlook Internet Mail service installed and they SHOULD be sending the email out itself. (Machines have access to the internet through a proxy MS Proxy Server)

This wasn't a problem when they were on Exchange 5.5 because I didn't have the Exchange Internet Mail Service installed on the server.

Does that make any more sense ?

Yeah. You probably need to set up Exchange 2K to forward all outgoing mail to a "Smart Host", which would be your proxy server. Find this setting in Exchange System Manager, Default SMTP Virtual Server properties, Delivery Tab, Advanced button.

I already setup the Exchange server to route to a smart host. I'm using IIS4's SMTP service on the proxy server. I got serveral messages to go out yesterday, but it stopped working later in the day.

I'd still like to "DISABLE" exchange's ability to send any outside email if possible, and just let the workstations take care of it if possible.

I'll keep working with using IIS's SMTP service for the smart host, has anyone done this in the past and had it work?
