I have a user who is running Outlook'98 with Office 97. He cannot open excel attachments and gives an error 'The system cannot find the file specified'. Has anyone come across this before?
This means that his file associations are broken . In windows when u click on a file (myspreadsheet.xls), Windows knows that an XLS file is associated with Excel. If this file association is broken then Outlook is unable to work out what application should open the file. Easiest way to fix this is to save the Excel attachment to local disk C:, double click on it and when Windows does not know what to do with it, configure the associated application at this point....
Incidentally, the machine in question DOES have Excel installed? (silly question I know... but.......)
Here is another solution. It is obscure but recognized by Microsoft.
In Excel go to Tools, Options and the General Tab you will see a check box that says "Ignore other applications". You need to do the opposite of what the box is currently ( check or uncheck). Then click OK. Now open your file in Outlook.
I have seen this cure the problem both ways.
