I am running Exchange 5.5 and IIS 5 on the same machine.
When accessing a mailbox from another machine I am first prompted for the mail box alias followed by a further prompt for a username and password. However, the only profile that will gain me access to a mailbox is the administrators. I have gone into the default website in IIS and added further profiles but without success. Where and how do I set up additional profiles that are allow users to use Web Access.

all users that you want to have access to OWA must have local accounts on the OWA machine

All users do have local accounts. Since posting my question I have spotted the following entry in the event viewer on the OWA machine when a user tries to log on: "The server was unable to log on the windows NT account due to the following error: the user has not been granted the requested log on type at this computer." I have chceked the user profile but cannot see any entries relating to log on type. Where and how is the correct log on type granted?

do they have access to logon locally? that may be your problem

(Win2K)

administrative tools ->
local security policy ->
local policies ->
user rights assignment.

these users must be in a group that has the effective setting to log on locally

The 'Log on Locally' Policy has the 'Users' box checked. Are there any other policies that might affect access??

In my situation I have exchange 5.5 on 2kserver and OWA on 2kpro. In order to get OWA to work at all I had to install the latest service pack from Microsoft. I never check the administrator acount even before the service pack.

I only had to install the SP4_550I.exe (first sp) to get it to work but I couldn't get it to work without that.

"I have gone into the default website in IIS and added further profiles but without success"

I'm not sure how you did that cause I didnt' set up any profiles in IIS
